Altar Servers
The mission of the Altar Server Ministry at St. Michael’s is to provide an opportunity for parishioners to actively participate in the tradition of Catholic worship. As Altar Servers parishioners assist the priests with processions, blessings, etc. during the celebration of Mass and other sacred ceremonies. The participation of Altar Servers in our liturgy is an important tradition in the Catholic Church that has its roots in vocational training. Serving on the Altar is a wonderful opportunity for our boys and girls who have received their first communion including older members of the parish, to experience Mass from “within” the Liturgy and grow in Christ.
Altar Servers help set up the Altar with the Sacristan in preparation for Mass, and then duties are allocated to each server by the senior server. During the procession to and from the altar and celebration of the Mass, the Altar Servers carry out various duties which include carrying the cross and candles together with the thurible and incense boat. Duties during Mass include holding various holy books for the priest to read from, preparation for Holy Communion, and finally removing sacred items from the Altar before the final blessing and processing from the Altar back to the Sacristy.
Participation in this ministry is very rewarding, and we will provide all the training and guidance you will need. If you are interested in this Ministry, please speak Fr Maria.
This ministry is open to all male or female who have at least made their first communion and there is no upper age limit and we encourage and welcome new altar servers. They are there to assist the priest at the altar.
